The Art of the Floral Flip: Repurposing Floral Arrangements from Ceremony to Reception

How an Experienced Floral Designer Will Maximize Your Flower Budget

Romantic roses – the timeless symbol of love – and locally grown dahlias star in a lush altar display created by Katie Wright-Thomas, owner of KatieDid Florals. These stunning stems are set to capture attention during the ceremony, but with careful planning, they can also bring beauty to other parts of the wedding day.

Repurposing Your Ceremony Floral Arrangements for Your Reception

“These pieces are designed and engineered to be repurposed for the reception in multiple applications,” Katie says. “Most weddings, even luxury ones, repurpose florals [to enhance different phases of the celebration]. The key is to hire a knowledgeable wedding floral designer who knows how to execute a floral flip.”

Versatile Ceremony Floral Options

The tall vases and low meadows shown here can be arranged in various ways. Katie groups the arrangements together at the altar to show off the maximum impact these florals can have. In a second example (pictured below) she places the meadows along the aisle, which gives guests an up-close look at the beautiful blooms and lets the tall vases shine as the altar backdrop.

Each of these elements is designed to smoothly transition to decorate a fireplace mantle, sweetheart table or cake display. They also make for striking photo booth backdrops, centerpieces and more.

“An experienced wedding florist is not only a designer, but a logistics and timeline expert, horticulturist and engineer who knows how to use floral mechanics creatively to make long-lasting, purposeful designs that can be beautiful in [multiple settings],” Katie says.
