Barefoot, Bohemian Bride Meets Bustling Southern City in Downtown Winston-Salem
Stephanie Schmidt of Stephanie Schmidt Photography planned and shot this industrial, bohemian wedding look at Downtown Winston-Salem NC wedding venue, the Historic Brookstown Inn. The classy and effortless bridal look is paired with a dark, moody color palette, highlighted in the floral design, venue decor, stationery suite, and bridal makeup.
Stephanie and a collaborative team of Winston-Salem based photographers, videographers, florists, and hair and makeup stylists wanted to show how simple and classy the bohemian bridal look is to achieve. Stephanie believes that photography is just as much about the experience as it is about the end product, and typically works with small weddings, elopements, couples, families, and individuals to bring magic to every single shot of even the smallest, most intimate events.
This photo shoot’s message surely extends beyond the stunning stills produced by the photographer, and the pictures are the product of creative planning and collaboration from each vendor featured in the project. This shoot heavily focused on bridal portraits at the Downtown Winston-Salem wedding venue and photo shoot locations, and the team worked to complement the bride’s natural beauty against the industrial backdrop of Downtown Winston-Salem.
The Hidden Gem of the Triad
Winston-Salem is a perfectly-central city for North Carolinian engaged couples to consider for their wedding day, as it is convenient for travel from other major NC cities! Just 1.5 hours to Raleigh, Charlotte, and the mountains, Downtown Winston-Salem is a well-kept secret of the Triad. With parks, hotels, shopping, and countless delicious restaurants, up-and-coming Downtown Winston-Salem will surely provide entertainment for you and your guests of all ages and interests.
Downtown Winston-Salem has a vibrant spirit that perfectly balances the old of the historic city and new, youthful, and trendy businesses popping up all over town. New lofts are tucked in between reimagined historic buildings and industrial architecture to give this sweet city an urban, industrial feel. Old railways take on new life as walking trails, parks are nestled between historic factories and detailed downtown blocks, and the numerous downtown eateries shut down 4th Street each week for the dinner crowd. Grab a scoop of ice cream from Krankie’s, hang out in Bailey or Downtown Parks, head to the ballpark and watch the Winston-Salem Dash play at Truist Stadium, or stroll the cobblestone streets of Historic Old Salem- there is certainly plenty to do downtown!
The bohemian photo shoot took place at the Historic Brookstown Inn, which was centrally located for all of the best city shots in the photo shoot. Featuring guest rooms and the outdoor courtyard frequently used for weddings, the photographer highlighted the inn’s exposed brick and natural lighting. Schmidt also focused on golds, greens, dark purple, and white while shooting to continue the Industrial Boho theme. The shoot consisted mostly of wedding portraits, and showcased the ease of a bohemian look that’s also classy and timeless. The delicate lace, exposed brick, and minimal effort styles (and costs!) created an easy look that focused on the natural, radiant beauty of the bride. The photos reflect who the bride is on her big day, rather than a huge production.
Industrial Boho Style at Downtown Winston-Salem NC Wedding Venue
Featured in Southern Living as one of “The South’s Best Hotels and Inns” and one of the 15 Best Romantic Getaways in North Carolina by the Crazy Tourist, the Historic Brookstown Inn was established in 1837 right around the corner from Old Salem. Originally the Salem Manufacturing Company, the former mill now boasts luxurious amenities for guests staying in their 70 guest rooms and can host up to 200 people in the grand ballroom. Guests can enjoy local wineries, museums, and everything else Winston-Salem has to offer.
The Historic Brookstown Inn offers multiple layout options for weddings and special touches for groups staying in room blocks (Freshly baked cookies and milk at bedtime? Yes please!). There’s even a resident inn cat named Sally who might hang around to catch your ceremony in the courtyard or say goodnight to your guests as they pass through the lobby in the evening. The charming, cozy inn set the tone as an incredibly warm, chic backdrop in the photo shoot and will do the same for your big day.
The bride clearly didn’t need much in terms of elaborate hair and makeup to be stunning and radiant! Model Molly Nunn’s hair was styled in loose curls and a simple braid to frame her face by Caroline Cartier. The simple hair style perfectly complemented the smoky eye and natural look makeup by Ashlyn Noto. The soft makeup and effortless hair complimented the bride’s natural features, rather than redefining them.
The surprising ease of this bridal look doesn’t just stop with the hair and makeup, the dress was an amazing Facebook Marketplace find! Originally from Lulu’s, the dress was unworn and snatched up on Facebook by the photographer, to continue the easy vibe of the shoot and to prove that any budget can still pull off an elegant, classic bridal look. The dress was paired with delicate jewelry from Walmart (yes, you read that right!) and no shoes as the perfect touch for the bride’s bohemian portraits.
Flowers by D created the beautiful, eclectic floral arrangements featuring white hydrangeas, blue thistle, deep purple stock, purple buttons, purple calla lilies, and blue eucalyptus. The curated, wild florals followed the bohemian theme while the moody, dark color palette featured in the arrangement maintained the elegance of the styled look.
Stephanie praises the collaboration between all the local vendors that made this vision a reality, saying community is always better than competition. The Winston-Salem wedding vendors also proved just how attainable a boho-chic wedding look could be on any budget. “Having a wedding on a budget does not have to mean sacrificing beauty and elegance,” says Stephanie.
So now whether you’re inspired to scour social media for a deal on a dress, say “I do” in Winston-Salem, or take your wedding portraits in the middle of your own downtown- this team sure is proud of how they represented the Winston-Salem wedding community and the creative freedom you can still have with even the smallest of budget.
