Colorful Boho Wedding at Overlook Barn
At Overlook Barn, this boho styled wedding strives to showcase unexpected color in a way that’s attainable for any couple. Photographer Ashley Olson captured the stunning, sweeping view from where the mountain wedding venue sits on Beech Mountain in Banner Elk, NC. Ashley, together with Kali Wolin of Overlook Barn, and the team at Fuschia Moss Floral, planned this styled wedding shoot. The goal was to take a different approach to boho wedding style than the all-neutral tones we’ve all seen before. This vibrant theme was inspired by the blooms of late summer. There’s no need to be afraid of color! Utilizing a wide range of color and unexpected pops of bright shades, this styled shoot shows you don’t have to stick strictly to neutrals to get that unique boho look.

This boho styled wedding also shows where hints of unexpected color can be added to your big day without completely overwhelming your floral or decor design. “I hope this shoot shows couples that color on your wedding day doesn’t have to be gaudy, tacky or gimmicky,” Ashley says. “That color can be beautiful, elegant, unique and timeless.”
This color palette suited Overlook Barn’s neutral tones. A range of pink, coral, orange and purple carry through the setting. Baby blue pops in the groom’s suit and is echoed in the cake icing and the seating area. The natural yet elevated boho wedding look has just a touch of glam. Overlook Barn’s historical, renovated barn provided just the right mix of elegance – with its white walls and 30-foot ceilings – and rustic, thanks to concrete floors and raw wood accents.
This mountain wedding venue was built in the 1960s by the grandfather of the current owner, Katie. In 2015, Katie and her then-fiancé, David, beautifully restored the property. They transformed it into the scenic mountain venue that it is today and their own wedding was the first to take place at Overlook Barn!
The photos tell the story of a whimsical love story in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Overlook Barn’s 6,500-square-foot space is updated with bulb string lights and separate getting-ready spaces for each wedding party. Under a delicate chandelier, the bride twirls in a flowy Katherine Tash Bridal gown. The models for this boho wedding at Overlook Barn are a real life couple who live in Raleigh.
Warm-toned, Colorful Boho Style
Ashley’s photography style is warm, vibrant and a little bit moody. When photographing couples, she focuses on creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for them and forges a connection before the camera is even turned on. Ashley’s style captured both colorful tones and playful light during this styled shoot at Overlook Barn. Hand-painted anthuriums where the star of this floral and lighting installation above the reception and seating area. Fuschia Moss Floral suspended a large branch above the dining table and added three large rattan shades, locally foraged greenery and flowers in pink, coral and purple tones. Table arrangements and the bride’s bouquet also incorporated these same colors along with orange.
How to Use Vibrant Wedding Decor and Details
Decor and floral design added pops of light pink, yellow and mossy green to tie in elegance and add to the boho theme. A charcuterie board by Stacie Saunders of High Country Boards added a fun twist to the lounge setup inside Overlook Barn. Plush velvet seating and cushions paired with textured accent pillows added visual interest to the setting. Rattan side tables and a bright rug finished the look.
The cake from Courtney Cakes NC carried through this colorful theme with bright orange, pink, neon blue and deep purple icing. A floral pattern draping down the side of the square, two-tier cake added a romantic feel. This floral overlay keeps the boxy shape from having a modern look, and instead falls in line with the updated boho style.
Boho Mountain Wedding at Overlook Barn
It’s hard to image a more fitting setting for this boho styled wedding than Overlook Barn’s view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Therefore, the altar backdrop was a simple yet impactful lattice with floral anchors. Can you imagine saying “I do” with the jaw-dropping, panoramic view of cascading mountain ridges behind you?
