Capturing a Colorful Celebration with Autumn Hunter

Live Wedding Painting in North Carolina’s Triangle Region

Live wedding painting is a lot like photography in that it’s meant to capture intimate moments during the bustle of your big day. But, in the hands of Raleigh-based abstract realism painter Autumn Hunter, is offers something more.

The Story of a Wedding Painter

Autumn has had a love for painting since childhood and, through years of experience and experimentation, has developed a style undeniably her own. However, her husband was the first to suggest she pursue live wedding painting and she was hesitant. “It’s funny how life works when you say ‘never,’” Autumn says. “Now most of what I do is wedding painting, and florals have become one of my most popular collections.”

Learning to be a wedding painter who delivers both high-value artwork and memorable experiences took lots of time and practice, but it has evolved into her passion. “Most of all, I love being able to give couples back the feeling they had on their wedding day,” Autumn says. “The first wedding painting I ever did was my own, so I got to experience firsthand how meaningful it is. What inspires me now is being able to transport couples back to that day in such a unique way.”

Wedding Painting: A Social Affair

Live wedding painting often comes with enriching comments and conversations from the couple’s friends and family. Autumn never attends a wedding without her “reaction camera,” perfect for catching some of the funnier guest interactions. “It can be nerve-racking at times, but it’s also incredibly rewarding,” Autumn says. “With experience, I’ve become much more comfortable painting live in front of an audience.”

Lifelong Memories

Much like with wedding photography, Autumn’s paintings serve not only as a memento of the love that created such a beautiful occasion, but also one that will adorn the walls of a couple’s home for years – serving as a daily reminder of the union they share. “Maybe ten years down the road, they’re in the middle of an argument, and one of them glances at the painting, feels those wedding emotions all over again and remembers, ‘This is why I married you,’” Autumn says. “That’s what makes this work so meaningful to me – knowing it will matter to this family for generations to come.”

An Artist’s Eye on Your Wedding Day

Autumn studied under Dimitra Milan and Elli Milan, who helped shape and inform her foundational techniques. She graduated from the yearlong intensive mastery program in 2023, having developed an advanced understanding of both mixed media and oil painting. “The abstract realism movement has also greatly influenced my work,” Autumn says. “I think it’s the perfect style for capturing not just the scene, but the ambience of a wedding.”

It can be hard for couples to choose a scene or setting that they feel fully captures their wedding day. This is where Autumn’s approach differs from many other wedding painters. “My focus is always on the couple, not the scene,” Autumn says. She specializes in close-up, intimate moments where the energy shared between a couple is ever-present. “If a couple wants to include elements of their venue, I can do that – it just tends to be more stylized or reimagined rather than a literal replica,” Autumn says. “After the ceremony, I do a mini photo shoot with them, and they get to choose their ‘pose’ for the painting. So, instead of freezing one specific moment, the painting captures the essence of the whole day and their love story.”

The Love is In the Details

A wedding is a momentous occasion meant to symbolize the union of two individuals, as well as their families, but not everyone may be able to attend. Autumn often includes symbolic representations of these family members – including beloved pets, children or those who have died – to make them part of the memory even if they aren’t there in person.

“I once had a bride bring me a 100-peso bill to collage into her painting,” Autumn says. “It had a butterfly on it and, to her, it symbolized her late father who had recently passed. These details make each painting even more personal and unique to [the couple’s] love story.”

Booking a Live Wedding Painter

Autumn books weddings year-round, with spring and fall being the busiest seasons. She recommends couples reach out as soon as they’ve locked in their date and venue so she can reserve their spot. “I recommend 6-12 months in advance, though many couples reach out even earlier,” Autumn says. “No matter where you are in your planning, it never hurts to check.”

Don’t hesitate to discuss financials with your artist – hiring a wedding painter is investing in a one-of-a-kind, museum quality piece. “Archival-quality wedding paintings require a lot of skill, planning and time to create,” Autumn says. “Most of my clients spend about the same amount they would for a wedding photographer, so it’s good to keep that in mind when budgeting.”

Connecting with Your Wedding Artist

It’s important to get to know your artist to ensure your portrait captures your connection. So, stay open, be honest, and don’t hide what makes your love story unique to you. “Don’t be afraid to share the funny moments, the vulnerable stories and the trips you’ve taken,” Autumn says. “The couples who share freely always end up with the best paintings, because painting you is so much more than copying a photo; it’s about capturing your love.”
