Color Block Wedding Ideas and Inspiration

Color block fashion is all the rage this season. We’ve seen this trend everywhere from the runway to Harrods department store to athletic ware. So why not transfer the iconic style to your wedding day?

Traditional color-blocking involves pairing two or three complementary colors to craft one outfit. Inspired by artist Piet Mondrain, it was designer Yves Saint Laurent who popularized color block fashion with his iconic Mondrian Dresses.

Whether you’re going for a bold look like Laurent, or looking for softer vibes, color blocking your wedding can help make the perfect statement. Check out these five simple tips to make a splash on your wedding day.

No. 1: Don’t choose the whole color wheel

As tempting as it might be to choose accessories for your wedding in every color, involving too many colors can make a space overwhelming. We recommend picking a few base colors, and working only with shades of those base hues to create a cohesive look. Maybe your wedding colors are yellow, red and pink, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to one shade of each. Add dashes of mustard and fuchsia to keep the look fresh.

No. 2: Add some color to your bridal look

If you’re a traditional bride looking to add something old, new, borrowed and blue, this is the perfect opportunity. Consider adding a subtle accessory, like a blue hairpiece or ribbon around your bouquet to add a splash of color. Or if you’re feeling bold, a blue underskirt or even a colorful gown makes a stunning impact. White gowns dip dyed in colorful dye on the skirt can also make a beautiful boho statement.

No. 3: Choose bold florals

If you’re looking for a colorful day, don’t skimp on the florals! They’re the perfect way to incorporate color without overwhelming guests. Sprinkle them around tables, craft a stunning arch for your ceremony, or even create a floral wall, the perfect backdrop for a photobooth. Talk with your florist about what is in season, and consider choosing your colors for the day around the freshest flowers.

No. 4: Match the wedding party outfits

Who said suits have to be navy or black? Consider going bold with red, golden or salmon attire for your male attendants, or maybe even for the groom. Or, if you’d like a more traditional look, add vibrant color to the men’s ties or boutineers.

As for the ladies, bridesmaids dresses don’t always have to be one color! Pick one or two colors, and pick varying shades for a cohesive but impactful look.

No. 5: Chose the season’s hottest colors

Need a bit of help picking the perfect shades for your wedding day? Luckily, for over 20 years, Pantone Color Institute has predicted and influenced color trends in everything from interior design to product packaging to fashion, and they’re here to help. Their hot colors of 2021 are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow.

Especially for a summer wedding, consider following the trends with bright lemony yellow pops, paired with sophisticated gray accents.
