The Durham Exchange is housed in a brick warehouse in Durham that was constructed in the early 1900s as a textile mill. The building was owned by Julian Carr for a time, who named it after John O’Daniel, one of the first Black land owner in Durham. The building was home to Durham’s first farmers’ market in the 1930s, and continued to serve as a major site of commerce until the 1980s before falling into disrepair. The warehouse later came under the ownership of Wendy K. Clark, who oversaw restoration of the red brick mill over a two-year period.
