Engaged in NC: A Surprise Proposal fit for a Princess
What I didn’t know, when we boarded a Disney Cruise in May of 2019, was that Kameron had purchased my engagement ring in November of the year before and to my surprise, had planned on proposing to me during that trip.
May 26 was a Sunday, the plan was to spend the day at sea as we traveled to Jamaica, but Kameron and I had decided to treat ourselves and attend a fancy brunch at a restaurant onboard, Palo.
Now, we aren’t typically the type of people to spend a bunch of money on a date. Usually, we would have just curled up on the couch with take-out and a movie, but today was a special occasion, even though I had no idea how special it was actually going to be.
After leaving our amazing brunch date, I had tunnel vision for the stateroom, ready to take off my fancy dress, which was required in the semi-formal restaurant. We ran into my parents in the atrium, and my mom was eager to take some photos of the two of us.
It took some convincing to slow me down to take a couple of pictures. I wasn’t crazy about taking an obsessive amount of photos anyway, but, by the persuading of Kameron and my mom, I obliged.
Our photo background was beautiful, a mosaic pieced together to depict Cinderella’s carriage. You would think that by now, I would have noticed the little signs that a proposal was coming, but when Kameron got down on one knee in the middle of the ocean off the coast of Cuba and asked me to be his forever, I was shocked.
Completely stunned, I remember looking down at the man who I had loved for so long on one knee in front of me, and while I had clearly not given him an answer (poor guy), he looked at me again and said, “Emma, are you going to marry me or what?”
I laughed before answering, “Um, yeah!”, and as cheesy as it all seemed, it was perfect, because it was the depiction of us.
The coolest thing was–especially if you’re a Disney nerd like me, was that after I said yes, Pluto ran up to Kameron and gave him a high-five. I mean, who can say that they were high-fived by Pluto after getting engaged?
Engaged in NC! Now What?
Since we were out of the country, we chose to wait to tell everyone about our engagement until we arrived back in our hometown of Brevard, North Carolina a week later, which gave us six whole days to enjoy the newness of being engaged in NC.
After we disembarked and left the magical week behind, going back home to North Carolina was a whirlwind of emotions. Suddenly we were faced with all these questions about a venue, and catering, and wedding florals. We knew we wanted a long engagement, but we also didn’t want to wait to make the big decisions about our perfect day.
However, none of the stress of those thoughts matched the pandemic related questions we soon faced as 2020 changed our world. As everything changed, we were left with our heads in our hands trying to determine what the world was going to be like on our big day.
