Dahlia Wedding Inspiration with NC Flower Farm Bluebird Meadows

Go Local with Your NC Wedding Flowers with Bluebird Meadows

If you shop local farmers markets, you’ve likely been beckoned by delightful bouquets of locally grown NC dahlias, zinnias and tulips. You may also spot other delicate beauties that you may not have even realized were available from local NC flower farms, like peonies, anemones and eucalyptus. NC flower farms like Bluebird Meadows, a grower near Durham NC, grow varieties from seed to blossom that have a wildflower beauty that makes us recall colorful country drives and backyard gardens at Grandma’s house. Lots of us in the NC Triangle Area have jumped into the locally grown food shopping experience, but why stop there? It is actually possible to “shop local” with your wedding flowers too – at least here in NC where we have access to a farmer who also happens to be a talented NC wedding florist – Bluebird Meadows!

Last fall, Southern Bride & Groom paid a visit to Bluebird Meadows Farm. We wanted to get a better understanding of Alice’s operation. Chapel Hill wedding photographer Katherine Miles Jones joined me (Jenna) on the trip. My daughter Cecelia, age 2 at the time, picked her first carrot, and fell in love with the farm as I did (she still asks about Alice today – six months later!).

Meet Alice White and Bluebird Meadows, a Local Flower Farm and one of our picks for the Best NC Wedding Florists

Bluebird Meadows specializes in both growing and arranging specialty cut flowers – you’ll find their flowers and vegetables in town at the Durham Farmers’ Market. They are also a NC wedding florist serving the Triangle and Triad Areas. Owner Alice White has an incredible flair for wedding arrangements. You don’t have to sacrifice design for local flowers when you use her for your NC wedding.

Flowers have always been Alice’s “passion and love,” and have been part of her farm since its inaugural season 12 years ago. Today, Alice and her husband, Stuart, run Bluebird Meadows together with a staff of six.

Alice has been designing weddings and events for years on a personal recommendation basis, but started becoming more committed to events with her dedicated staff a few years ago. She has quickly gained a reputation for delivering high quality service and beautiful design work.

“I’ve always had a penchant for beauty and aesthetics and, for me, flowers are the ultimate expression of art in nature.  They give me something I have trouble finding anywhere else in life so I guess they are therapeutic for me,” says Alice.

A Truly Local NC Wedding Florist Experience – Bluebird Meadows

There are indeed many NC wedding florists that source some of their flowers from local growers. But there is something special about knowing your wedding florist is creating your reception centerpieces with flowers that she herself grew! It adds a level of authenticity and sustainability into your wedding day. Bluebird Meadows does work with flowers by the seasons, but we were told that when a couple comes to them early enough, they can plan and plant with a palette and vision in mind for most color themes. The designs are always lush and natural from this true floral artist. If you are a bride that wants to go local with your NC wedding flowers, Bluebird Meadows is the place to go.

Dahlia Wedding Bouquet Inspiration by NC Florist Bluebird Meadows

The wildflower look is surging in popularity in wedding design. One of the most popular locally grown NC flowers is the dahlia, known for their giant round blossom. Alice grows over 800 – yes you read that correctly – dahlia plants on her NC flower farm, Bluebird Meadows. And they come in many varieties, too. The American Dahlia Society currently lists 21 forms and 10 size classifications. So we thought it would be fun for Alice to show us how she can design wedding bouquets in different styles and colors using these gorgeous locally-grown NC dahlia beauties!

If you want to feature local NC dahlias in your wedding bouquet, Alice says, “their best time in the Piedmont is after the peak of summer – when cooler temperatures start to kick in around early September.”
