Purple Accents at a Summer Wedding at The Umstead
Several years before Haley and Drew said their vows during an outdoor wedding ceremony at The Umstead Hotel & Spa, the couple met through mutual friends in 2014. They immediately hit it off. Haley was living in Charlotte at the time but traveled back to Raleigh the next weekend to see Drew again. She already knew there was something special between them. Nearly four years later, Drew popped the question during dinner at Sullivan’s Steakhouse, where the couple celebrated after Haley passed her anesthesia board exam. “The whole restaurant was applauding and it was truly one of the absolute best moments of my life and our relationship,” Haley says. “It was perfect and it was the best surprise I have ever received.” Keep reading to learn more about Haley and Drew’s romantic summer wedding with purple and lavender details at The Umstead in Cary.
Coming Full Circle at The Umstead
Haley and Drew had a special connection with The Umstead’s property in Cary, having spent their first anniversary there in 2015. They toured several potential North Carolina wedding venues but none seemed to measure up to The Umstead’s elegance, charm and amenities. Haley says The Umstead’s entire team, from the concierge to the wait staff, all played a role in making their special day as flawless as it was.
“Working with Kayla Bower [to plan our wedding] at The Umstead was amazing. She was so organized and helped keep everything running so incredibly smooth,” Haley says. “Drew and I, together with all of our guests, were made to feel like we were right at home and we were so well cared for.”
Planning from Out of State
Once they decided on The Umstead, Haley and Drew moved forward with help from wedding coordinator Elizabeth Flake of A Southern Soiree. Thanks to Elizabeth, the couple planned their special day all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico – two time zones away from North Carolina.
“We have nothing but respect, admiration, and fond memories for all that Elizabeth and the A Southern Soiree team has done for us,” Haley says. “They led us in the right direction when it came to choosing vendors, staying on a timeline, joining us at our menu tasting and rehearsal.”
Big Blooms for a Purple Summer Ceremony at The Umstead
Since they were going to be married on August 31, Haley and Drew felt like an outdoor, late-summer wedding ceremony decorated with big blooms was a natural fit. Embellished Blooms owner Michelle Duncan provided the perfect purple floral arrangements to accentuate the wedding’s navy, white and lavender color scheme.
“Everyone in our family still talks about the flowers at our wedding and I am still in awe,” Haley says. “Michelle even surprised me with bringing my bouquet to me while I was having my hair and makeup done, and it brought me to tears.”
Despite happy tears, Haley’s makeup remained pristine throughout the day and night thanks to the team from Wedded Kiss. Haley says their humor and talent made her and her bridal party – who wore lavender bridesmaid dresses from Bella Bridesmaids – feel like “queens.” “I can’t imagine there would be any other team that I would have wanted to start my wedding day with,” Haley says.
Haley’s wedding shoes, which originally belonged to her mother, served as her “something borrowed” on the day.
Effortless Summer Ceremony with Lavender Details
Haley and Drew exchanged their vows during an outdoor ceremony on the lawn of The Umstead. Triangle String Quartet set the mood for “I do’s” by playing songs that the couple picked out. A circular arch adorned with huge hydrangea blooms and lavender flowers was the backdrop for their ceremony. The program was customized for the couple with the help of their wedding officiant, Barbara Lodge.
“All the songs we chose meant something to us and our relationship, and to hear it on a string quartet was so unique,” Haley says.
Celebrations continued into the indoor reception, where guests enjoyed a delicious dinner catered by The Umstead while sitting at tables adorned with napkins from CE Rental and floral centerpieces. Later in the evening, a wedding cake baked by Ashley Cakes gave guests a sugar rush to dance the night away with DJ Rang.
Ending to the Perfect Day
The night ended with a confetti send-off, but not before Haley and Drew shared a dance, just the two of them, to their favorite song.
“It was so perfect and emotional for us both,” Haley says. “We were able to just take it all in and share a quiet moment together.”
