Saying ‘I Do’ at Duke Chapel

When, Where and How to Book Duke Chapel for Your Wedding

Duke University Chapel weddings are truly unforgettable. This gothic-style chapel is a gorgeous, historic highlight of the university’s campus, and stands out for its breathtaking medieval-style architecture – making it one of the most highly sought-after venues for weddings in the Triangle. The chapel’s high ceilings, stained glass windows and towers provide picturesque backdrops for ceremonies.

The first wedding ceremony held at the chapel was in April 1933, when Marion Noell Lyon, the grand niece of James Buchanan Duke, wed her beau. It now hosts about 60 and 70 weddings each year, with up to two ceremony time slots available on Saturdays (you can pick from 3 or 6 p.m.).

Duke Chapel Weddings: An Iconic Gothic Chapel in Durham, NC

Duke Chapel is an extremely popular location for wedding ceremonies in Durham, North Carolina. Many to-be-weds throughout the South dream of tying the knot at this special chapel, from locals who grew up admiring the steeple as well as Duke University alum who return to the Bull City from near and far to wed at this special site.

Many couples who book Duke Chapel for their ceremony host their wedding reception at nearby Duke-affiliated sites, such as Sarah P. Duke Gardens, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club.

How to Book Duke Chapel: Updated Reservation Process

In past years, couples camped out in tents for days in hopes of securing their preferred date for their ceremony at the historic chapel. While this tradition certainly created fun memories for couples, the chapel has updated its reservation process to a digital format.

“Now, we have electronic sign-ups on the first business day of the month at 8:30 a.m. over email,” says Duke Chapel wedding coordinator Cristina van Werkhoven. “Dates are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, in accordance with the order that emails are received.” The chapel accepts reservations for that month the following year – for example, those who want to be married in July 2027 would need to register in July 2026.

A wedding reservation at Duke Chapel costs $3,900, which includes exclusive use of the chapel and grounds for a three-hour time slot, an assigned chapel wedding director and organist, and a live stream and video recording of your ceremony.

Who Can Reserve a Wedding Ceremony at Duke Chapel?

While Duke Chapel is a popular venue for Durham weddings, it is not open for any couple to book. In order to schedule a wedding, blessing ceremony or reaffirmation of wedding vows, one of the couple or one of their parents or grandparents must be a current full-time Duke student, graduate or a current full-time Duke employee.

Because of this requirement, “weddings at Duke Chapel tend to be a family affair,” Christina says. “We have multiple ceremonies per year where the couple’s siblings, parents and/or grandparents have [also] gotten married at the chapel.”

Once you’ve booked your ceremony, get that guest list ready, because the chapel allows up to 500 guests!

“We’ve also had couples come back to visit with their children, showing them around the church and pointing out the spot on campus where they got engaged,” Cristina adds. “We feel honored to support our couples along every stage of their journey.”

Can’t imagine taking engagement pictures anywhere else? You’re in luck! While photography sessions inside Duke Chapel are only available for couples who have ceremony reservations, anyone is welcome to capture engagement photos on the chapel’s grounds. Contact chapelweddings@duke.edu to schedule a photo session.
