The Colonial Inn: A New Wedding Venue in downtown Hillsborough NC
The Colonial Inn in Hillsborough has undergone an incredible transformation. The historic venue is now a 28-room boutique hotel with event-center space and a bar open to the public. Elise Tyler saw the value of the worn-down 250-year-old landmark and decided to give it the makeover of a lifetime. With its beautiful oak beams, stunning porch and a honeymoon luxury suite, it’s spectacular!
The event space seats about 125 people. The room with its expansive mirrors is a perfect spot for your wedding ceremony, bridal party or reception. The nearby trendy bar has plush wingback chairs and brass cocktail holders. On top of that, antique brass will be threaded throughout the interior design. There is also plenty of gorgeous space outside the Colonial Inn for your ceremony or reception to take place. Between the main building and its annex, a courtyard will be decorated with southern flora and fauna. Plus, a paved path runs at the rear of the annex building on the back of the property to the service parking area for the caterers to use so they can bring in all of their equipment and supplies. And how could we forget the porch, the Colonial Inn’s most notable and recognizable feature– ideal for wedding party photos or cocktail hour!
The Colonial Inn Gets an Upgrade: Preserving a Piece of History
The Colonial Inn has occupied a spot on King Street since the 1800s. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Colonial Inn is the only antebellum hotel in Hillsborough that still exists. It stands testimony to each period of ownership and has lasted through successful years, wartime, and harsh economic times.
Elise Tyler’s team has been hard at work priming and painting fireplace mantles, baseboards and door frames. The historic windows of the Inn have been removed, restored, and placed back into their original setting. The amazing space is now open to the public and you can view first-hand the chic light fixtures and plush furniture. There are seven rooms on the second level of the main building. These are unique spaces of different designs, sizes and shapes. The new design of The Colonial Inn is neoclassical, comfortable, warm and accommodating.
The honeymoon suite is on the second floor and it has a private entrance, living room space, bar cart and an upholstered sectional sofa. The bedroom has beautiful fixtures and floating nightstands. Couples can also enjoy the jacuzzi room, which has a self-heating jacuzzi tub with Bluetooth speakers and a TV. So what are you waiting for? The Colonial Inn is booking 2021 events now!

The original Colonial Inn was known by locals and travelers for it’s authentic and savory southern homestyle cooking. After over 20 years of waiting, Beau’s Catering is bringing that memory back to life with their local and free-range signature fried chicken, a secret recipe only used at the Inn. Fried chicken, shrimp and grits, or sweet potato hash will give guests that southern taste they’ve been craving from the Colonial.
Beau’s brunch occurs every other week. While they are currently keeping their guest numbers down for safety, they anticipate the warm weather to seat more people on the spacious outdoor deck.
