Joe Payne is a Raleigh-based wedding and portrait photographer, but his experience spans all over the world! He was born and raised in the UK and spent seven years living in Spain before moving to the USA in 1999. He studied History of Art and Hispanic Studies at the University of Liverpool and from there, took a career in publishing and media design and before transitioning into photography. He brings a keen artistic eye to the wedding photographs he captures and strives to capture the wedding day in an artistic yet realistic way.
About 95% of what Joe Payne does is photojournalistic from the standpoint that he does not direct the day and he focuses on an authentic documentary-style approach. For the portrait side of things, however, a certain amount of direction is needed, but he still aims to make it as authentic as possible. “It’s about capturing my subject’s personality, not about me having them try to pose or interact in a way that doesn’t represent who they really are,” he explains,
Clients are drawn to Payne because they enjoy his natural, documentary style and artistic vision in terms of composition and use of light. “I work hard to combine those aesthetic aspects with my ability to anticipate and capture authentic moments as they unfold before my camera,” he says. “Emotion, light and composition is what I strive to bring forth with every image I produce.”
