Break out your fancy hats and bow ties because this weekend is the Kentucky Derby! Derby Day has become much more than a horse race, everything from the fashion to the food & drink to the fun festivities make it a perfect themed event no matter where you watch.
You can even incorporate Derby themed elements into your wedding, especially if it takes place in the spring or on a farm with horse stables. Take a look at Southern Bride & Groom’s Derby Themed photo shoot from last year’s magazine for ideas, and look below for inspiration from the University Club’s annual Derby Day party (taking place this Saturday, May 7, 2016).
Fabulous Fashion
Of course, one of the first things that come to mind in association with Derby Day is fabulous hats and Southern swagger! The Kentucky Derby brings to mind traditional elegance: men clad in dapper suits, ladies donning decorative hats, and of course, lots of red roses.

Run for the Roses
The “Run for the Roses” theme can be incorporated in the centerpieces, signage and other decor. Of course, horses must also be a part of the decor! If you’re not on a farm with a real one, think about placing small figures near the buffet, or even having cookies with horses on the frosting.
Sipping Juleps in Southern Style
Mint juleps are the classic drink of the derby. You can create your own version with local spirits.

Southern charm is part of the look, so serving food in mason jars and drinks with colorful straws to match.
