5 Tips for Mother of the Bride Dresses to go From Blah to Beautiful

What Should the Mother of the Bride Wear?

Yes, while your child’s wedding day is all about their love, it doesn’t mean you can’t look cute either! Today’s mother of the bride (and mother of the groom!) fashion is far from boring beige dresses and unflattering figures. These days, there’s an abundance of different styles and colors out there to flatter every body type and personality. It’s your chance to really get glammed up to celebrate your child while looking great for those pictures! Here are 5 tips for finding the perfect mother of the bride dress for the big day. Get excited, it’s almost like you’re the one getting married again!

Tip #1: Talk to your child first

It is their big day, after all, so you definitely want to make sure you’re not stepping on anyone’s toes. Ask if they envision you wearing a particular mother of the bride dress, like any specific colors or styles. The bride and groom set the tone for their wedding day, so you don’t want to look out of the loop! The ultimate decision is up to you, but you want to make sure you’re following his or her guidelines for what they want the bridal party and family to look like.

Tip #2: Color, with caution!

As the final decision is up to you, you may want to keep a few things in mind regarding color. You do NOT have to wear beige. It’s a common myth that beige is what mother of the brides or mother of the grooms have to wear, but it’s entirely untrue. You may choose a color that matches the bridal party or theme, or you can wear something completely different. However, try to avoid wearing the exact same color as the bridesmaids. In addition, don’t be afraid of black! Black is becoming a popular choice for mother of the brides, it’s so chic and flattering! White should only be reserved for the bride, but you can wear it if they insist.

Tip #3: Be comfortable

Just because a wedding is a special occasion, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your comfort! Not only will you be taking plenty of pictures that last forever, but you will most likely be walking around all day. Choose a mother of the bride dress that makes YOU look your best, whether that be short or long, long sleeves or none, or a light or dark color. We want you to feel comfortable and beautiful at the same time!

Tip #4: Look ahead

The mother of the bride and mother of the groom should start looking for their dresses about six months in advance. This allows time to order the dress if necessary and get alterations. Know that mothers of dresses are seasonal, unlike bridal gowns, so looking early will give you plenty of options.

Tip #5: Mothers of the Groom

Mothers of the bride and mothers of the groom do not have to coordinate unless they choose to. It is a good rule of thumb that if the mother of the bride wears a long dress, then the mother of the groom should too, and vice versa. They also do not have to wear the same color, but it is common to have the MOB to pick out her dress first so they do not accidentally look alike.

These tips are sure to help you easily find the mother of the bride dress of your dreams for your daughter’s wedding!
