School spirit is strong at colleges and universities across the Triangle – especially during big national events like March Madness!  If you and your beau meet at one of the local universities, or are both fans of one of them, it could become a perfect wedding theme.

When the wedding is at a chapel or establishment on one of the university campuses, it becomes a natural theme for everything from flower colors to party favors, and wedding pictures can be taken at the school’s iconic landmarks like the Old Well at UNC Chapel Hill. For an element of surprise, sport a school-themed garter. Some couple’s even close out the evening by having their guests wave school-colored pom-poms for the exit send-off! (Photos by Jagg Photography)

For couples who are really enthusiastic about sports, consider renting out part of a stadium or arena. Football players will feel right at home in The Blue Zone at UNC and baseball fans will adore all the photo opps at The Durham Bulls Athletic Park at American Tobacco. Dessert is another fun way to incorporate your favorite team into your wedding. This can be done with sports-themed cupcakes, like these Durham Bull’s bites from GiGi’s Cupcakes, or a groom’s cake, like this UNC football jersey. The Groom’s cake is often presented at the rehearsal dinner, but is sometimes saved for the wedding itself. (Top photo by Brian Mullins Photography; bottom photo by Neil Boyd Photography)

Don’t forget the mascots! Most school or team mascots can be hired to make an appearance at your reception and they’re guaranteed to be the life of the party! (Top photo by Jagg Photography; bottom photo by Brian Mullins Photography)
