Engagement Photo Spots in the Triangle: Tips From Triangle Wedding Photographers
Think about the vibe of your wedding venue when it comes to selecting a setting for your engagement portraits. “Use this as an opportunity to add variety in your overall photo/video collection,” says photographer Richard Barlow. He recommends choosing a location or activity that’s part of your day-to-day life as a couple. “I’ve done engagement sessions at CrossFit gyms, at breweries and on hikes. … This is an easy way to help let your guard down and get the really good photos to happen,” he says.
Get the Most From Your Engagement Photo Shoot
I tell couples that an engagement session is like a first date with your photographer,” says Danielle Volk, founder of Danielle Volk Creative. “Your photographer is the one vendor you’ll spend the most face time with on your wedding day, so it’s a great way to get a sense for your posing style. And, you’ll want to make sure they’re somebody you connect with, who you’ll be comfortable having in getting-ready suites with you and during those emotionally charged moments of your wedding day.”
Fancy This Photography founder Nikki Whitt Belch agrees. “The purpose of an engagement session is twofold: It gives the photographer a chance to get to know the couple, and it gives the couple a chance to take professional photos that aren’t in formal attire. These images can be used for save-the-dates and the wedding website.”
Elyssa Kivus of Kivus & Camera takes a similar approach. “I want an engagement session to feel like a date that I’ve been documenting,” she says. “I encourage couples to think about things they genuinely enjoy doing together, whether that’s being out in nature or, for a couple who like spending time playing video games, we could have a photo session at home. … I want your personality to shine through.”

The Best Engagement Photo Spots in the Triangle
North Carolina Museum of Art
The 164-acre museum park is dotted with beguiling sculptures. “The museum is a beautiful location, and it does have a visitor center where you’re able to change outfits,” Danielle says. You’ll encounter a variety of backdrops for your portraits here. “There’s the structural elements of the museum itself and the art pieces, and also a lot of natural, open spaces,” Danielle says.
Elyssa recommends visiting ahead of time to narrow down your favorite areas. “Choosing two to three locations will make the session more efficient,” she says. Also keep in mind how far from the parking area you’ll be. “If your session is during summer, you won’t want to be walking very far,” she adds. “And, for those final moments around sunset, make sure you’re finishing up close to the parking lot.” The park closes at dusk year-round.
Union Hall
This downtown Raleigh train station hosts full-scale weddings and is also a great spot for engagement photos – the neon sign is a favorite! You’ll need to submit a request for a 90-minute time slot and pay a $50 fee.
Sarah P. Duke Gardens
Sarah P. Duke Gardens is a very popular site for engagement photos in the Triangle given its picturesque landscapes and blooming flowers. Plus, there are so many photo backdrop options here. The Garden Gateway project, which expanded the visitor center and entrance, wrapped up in spring 2026.
Be aware that you’ll need a permit for a photo session at Duke Gardens. Fees range from $100 to $300 depending on the number of people in your party, and rates are higher for golden hour (8-10 a.m. and after 3 p.m.) time slots.
The Dillon
The ninth-floor public urban park at The Dillon in Raleigh is an ideal spot for downtown cityscape views.
American Tobacco Campus
Here you’ll find plenty of photo-worthy backdrops with industrial vibes. Parking is easy at one of three decks on campus, but avoid scheduling your session when there’s an event taking place at the neighboring Durham Performing Arts Center or Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Also “be cautious of reds in your outfit,” says photographer John Branch IV. “There’s a lot of brick, and red on red is very hard to edit.”
City Parks
“A lot of the Wake County parks don’t require a permit fee, but you need to make an appointment in advance so they can control the number of photographers on the property,” Danielle says. Also keep in mind that some parks “are going to be much more well-traveled than somewhere that requires a permit,” she adds.
Restaurants and Bars
A photo session at your favorite eatery or the brewery where you had your first date can make for fun, sentimental images, but may require a little extra planning. Elyssa says she often schedules engagement sessions on weekday evenings for ease. “Sometimes crowds can be cool, but some couples feel awkward if there are lots of people watching them.” Consider how comfortable you feel taking photos in a public setting, or arrange for your session to take place before opening or after closing for a more intimate experience.
